"Sage of the Steppe" Limited Edition Reproduction

from $30.00

The painting above features Rubber Rabbitbrush & Big Sage, two shrubs that shape the sagebrush steppe and are ecologically compatible with one another. These two plants bring a wash of green and yellow to much of the Western United States in the late Summer as the Rabbitbrush blooms. At first glance, the wide expanses of the steppe seem barren, but the ecosystem is actually quite diverse, hosting a wide variety of wildflowers, shrubs, forbs, grasses, insects, and wildlife… one of which is the Ferruginous Hawk, who calls the Sagebrush Steppe home. The hazy sun and background represent the effects of fire on the ecosystem which is a complicated and changing relationship as both the frequency of fire and introduction of non-native grasses (that grow back quickly after fire & create more fuel for fire) threaten the ecosystem.

Species: Ferruginous Hawk, Rubber Rabbitbrush, Big Sage, Weidemeyer's Admiral, Common Side-Blotched Lizard
