In 1987, the California Condor went extinct in the wild. The 27 remaining individuals were bred in zoos and re-introduced to the American West over the following decades. The population is now closer to 560. The California Condor remains one of the rarest bird species in the world. While it does not currently exist in the wild in Oregon, there is talk of re-introducing the Condor to the PNW, so I chose to pair my subject with Oregon White Oak. One of the preferred habitats of the California Condor is Oak Savannas, and some species of Earth Star prefer oak stumps. I thought the mushroom and oak galls perfectly mirror the wrinkly texture of the bird and also represent the recycling and renewal of nutrients (since the Condor eats the dead).
